Sizing Your Coop is Critical
A general guideline is to provide 10–15 square feet of outdoor run space per chicken. For example, a flock of 10 chickens should have between 100–150 square feet to move, forage, and establish natural behaviors. Proper spacing plays a critical role in reducing stress, minimizing aggression, and supporting overall flock health.

Coop space requirements are more compact, as chickens primarily use the coop for roosting and shelter at night. We recommend approximately 2 square feet per chicken inside the coop, ensuring adequate comfort without overcrowding.

Predator Proof Chicken Coops

Predator protection is one of the most important elements of a properly built chicken coop, especially in areas with active wildlife. Every TF Coop is designed with layered defenses that stop predators before they ever reach your flock. We install a 2-foot wide hardware cloth barrier around the entire perimeter of the coop, laid at ground level to prevent digging predators like raccoons, foxes, and coyotes from tunneling underneath. All runs and windows are enclosed with ½" PVC-coated hardware cloth, which is significantly stronger than standard chicken wire and resists rust, chewing, and bending over time. This approach protects against climbing, digging, and squeezing predators while maintaining airflow and visibility. The result is a secure, long-term solution that keeps your birds safe day and night — without compromising durability, function, or aesthetics.

FAQ

How long does it take to build a chicken coop?
The typical lead time is 2 weeks after receiving the order. Backlog can affect this lead time
When laying the predator skirt, do you bury it?
This is something we CAN accomodate. Typically, we do not as most customers enjoy doing their own landscaping. Rock gardens or mulch beds over the predator skirt are a sought after style!
Do you build on uneven ground?
We will asses the area and determine if we can add blocks to acquire grade or if we need to bring in our contractors to level the ground. Note, that the coop being on blocks does not affect the security of your coop. The predator skirt will still provide sufficient protection.
Can I customize size, color and features?
Yes, this is your world and we are here to bring your dreams to life. Our customers tend to match the color theme of their homes to bring their vision together!
Do I need a permit for a chicken coop in NJ?
This is determined by size. Chicken coops are treated like sheds in NJ. Most temporary (non permanent structures) structures do not require a permit if they are under 200sqft. We will asses the situation and take necessary actions.
